Artist Statement
Often described as a "painterly painter," my work might be described as abstract realism.
The over 35 years I have painted have privileged me to be a part of so many precious moments in time, sometimes like a photo album or travel journey. As an artist, our eyes are always in tune or receptive to the visual. Subject matter varies a great deal in my work. Life offers me more than what might be expressed in a restricted body of work.
In an attempt to express why I paint, it is simply what I am about and might reveal an idea of who I am. As a painter, the work becomes a combination of the visual, along with the heart and soul of the artist. It is all about the process. There is excitement in connecting with your materials; mixing paints, the feel of the brushes, the surface you have chosen to work on, in addition to the “let go, let it happen” attitude.
My paintings are an emotional response, stimulated by good design, interesting shapes and interesting light. The work that gives me the most satisfaction is a painting that has a voice of its own and seems to paint itself.
A native New Mexican, my life is enriched by living on a ranch in the Hondo Valley in southern New Mexico. Travel always provides inspiration, but the open space of the Southwest is what puts me in that magical creative space.
As with most artists, I continually experiment with new forms of expression, enjoying the adventure and am pleased when a viewer shares in the journey. My most recent work moves toward nonobjective abstract. This work represents painting from within, rather than from what I see.
